Free WordPress Theme: Paisley great website design

Paisley: a free Wordpress theme for the crafter in you. Big, bold header that makes a statement.

By Ars Grafik

Today we’ve released another free WordPress theme: Paisley. I’m really excited about this one. I was experimenting with collages in Photoshop and Illustrator recently and got inspired–hence, the theme.

The Paisley theme features a colorful grunge header with homemade paisleys, patterns, and brushes. It’s a two-column theme, it’s clean, well-organized, and widget-ready. The body is dark, with ample space for posts and images (as you can see, the images look gorgeous on a dark background!). Tabbed navigation lets you add multiple pages.

Small details, like how the date and number of comments are displayed, make this theme really spectacular. It’s grunge, and it’s also simple and modern.

Paisley’s gone through the gamut of browser testing and passed with flying colors. Leave us a comment about the theme and your experience with it–we like hearing your thoughts!

We hope you like it as much as we do!

To install the Paisley theme, you will need to:

  • Unzip the paisley.1.1.zip folder
  • Upload the full folder paisley to wp-content/themes
  • Go to your WordPress admin panel
  • Open the appearance drop-down and select themes
  • Select the Paisley theme and click Activate Paisley

    First, I would like to thank you for sharing this wonderful theme, I love it! Next, I would like to ask if there is a way to make the “next” at the bottom of the page any more noticeable for readers? Thank you.

    Here is one way to make the font larger and more noticeable. open the theme editor from your wp-admin dashboard. Select home.php, and look for this code:

    <?php posts_nav_link(' &#8212; ', __('&laquo; Previous Page'), __('Next Page &raquo;')); ?></p>.

    We are going to add some inline style to the paragraph tag. It will then look like this:

    <p style="font-size:26px;"><?php posts_nav_link(' &#8212; ', __('&laquo; Previous Page'), __('Next Page &raquo;')); ?></p>

    Now the font size for the Next Page and Previous Page links is 26px, or whatever you decide to make it.

    I hope that helps!

    Hello again Evan. I was wondering if there is a way to change the current paisley header with something else. I really love the theme and want to keep using it for a long time, but I get board really easy and like change every now and then. So I thought that if there was a way to switch out the header design every so often, it would help keep the theme fresh and keep me from having to change the whole theme every time I was ready for a change. Let me know what you think.

    Thanks,

    Theresa

    Hi Theresa,

    I think mixing up the header images would be really cool. We have done the same thing on a couple of sites using the Paisley theme. Here is how it works:

    -create a banner using a 1400 X 449px, canvas. If you look at the current image you will notice that the lower inch is a solid color, on which the navigation stands out. I would try to recreate this effect, or at least avoid noisy patterns that might cause the tabs to blend in. Save image.

    -Using a FTP transfer client like Filezilla, upload the image to wp-content/themes/paisley/images.

    -From your wp-admin dashboard, select Editor from the Appearances drop-down. This should take you to the page style.css, to check look in the right column for Stylesheet to be highlighted. Near the top of the page you will find this code:

    body {
    	background: #242423 url("/wp-content/themes/paisley/images/paisley_header.jpg") no-repeat center top;
            color:#000;
            font: 100% "Trebuchet MS", Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif;
    	}

    In the Paisley theme the header image is actually the background image for the whole page, but is positioned at the top center of the page. To swap images replace paisley_header.jpg with the file name of your new banner. Save the changes, and see how it looks.

    It’s a great idea. Maybe Kendall will put together a couple of alternative headers and make them available on this site also.

    If kendall would do that, that would be wonderful! In the mean time though, I have some ideas I wanted to try out but I am not sure how to crop them into 1400 X 449px, canvas because I do not have photo shop. Do you have any suggestions for me? I really appreciate your help! Thank you so much!

    Absolutely,

    There is a great open source bitmap editor called, Gimp that you can download free. It has all the features you will need to make great new banners.

    Wow, that was a lot harder then I expected! I am not so sure that I like the way it turned out though. I could not figure out how to edit the images’ lower portion. I wanted to keep the solid color on the bottom and the whole zigzag line to separate the pattern from the solid color, and even the smudge where my URL appears. In other words, I only wanted to change the pattern part. Is that possible? If so, could you tell me how to do it? Ma bye you could check out what I did and tell me what you guys think? Thanks again.

    Hi Theresa,

    I know we already talked about this through email, but I thought I’d let you and anyone else wiht this question know that I’ve posted a tutorial on how to change the header in the Paisley theme. You might want to check out this post: How to Change the Header in the Paisley Theme for future changes. I used GIMP a long time ago and don’t remember if you can open Photoshop files with it, so you might have to get a bit creative if not. Give it a shot though, it might work!

    Hey guys,
    After I updated Wordpress I noticed that the “filed under” at the bottom of each post, is no longer formatted correctly, on some of my post. I deleted the first post that I noticed to have this problem, but after doing so I scrolled down and noticed another one with the same distortion. Could you please check it out and let me know how I can fix this.
    Thank you so much,
    Theresa

    Theresa,

    I took a look at your site and it looks fine with my browser. What browser are you using?

  12. Theresa
    06.11.09

    I noticed the problem after updated to WordPress 2.8. But to answer your question I am using Windows Internet Explorer 8. After reading your question I used AOL to look at my site and I did not see the problem. So I guess it is e8. Does that mean I should go back to the older version on explorer?

  13. Evan
    06.11.09

    No, I wouldn’t revert to an older browser. I will be out of town for a couple of days, but when I get back I will trouble shoot this issue in IE8. I will let you know what I find. Thanks for the heads up.

    Ok then, I won’t change it. You should also know that I used AOL today to look at my site again, and this time it was all distorted the whole page! I could not even read my post; everything was so dark and pushed together to the left. Then my mom called me to tell me that she was seeing the same thing using Internet Explorer. However, when I look at it under IE8 it looks fine. So, I don’t know what is going on. I sure hope it is not something I did when I edited the font on the title, but that can’t be it because then it would not look right in IE8 either. Would it? No, I think it has something to do with the browsers like you mentioned before. Let me know what you think when you get back. I hope you have a safe and fun vacation and I am sorry if I have caused you any inconveniences.

    Thank you,
    Theresa
