Thanks Kendall – that is what i suspected!
I am playing around with it now – got everything but the gradient to work (my illustrator skills are pretty limited)

You’re right–it’s normal to see the black and white pattern. I do this because generally people want to customize the colors to whatever they prefer, and because gradient backgrounds (like the one you see on this image) don’t work with patterns.

To customize the pattern, you’ll want to work with the swatch on the left of the .ai download file. Double click on the area you want gray, and keep double clicking until it’s isolated. Then choose the color you want it to be instead of the black. I’m pretty sure the white part of the pattern is actually a transparency (if not, you can select and delete it to make it that way), so you can layer the pattern over/under other color/gradient layers to get the same effect as that in the image.

Thanks Kendall – i can download the zip file and when i open it in Illustrator it seems to be a slightly different damask pattern than the thumbnail (black and white instead of the dark black and grey with fade) Is this normal? Is there some manipulation that i have to do to get it to look like the Damask No 2 thumbnail?

I can’t seem to download the corrent image for Damask No2 (the dark black).
